1901 Western League
Thomas Hickey's move west begins to end here. As Western League president he dropped Sioux City and Pueblo but added Colorado
Springs to balance Denver. He added the hot Minneapolis-St. Paul rivalry by picking up those cities, making an eight team league, and
put the hammer down with the addition of the big AL-dropped Kansas City franchise. Unfortunately, who owned "the franchise" was in
dispute and for the next two years two Kansas City (MO) teams would operate.
28-year old minor leaguer Bob Ewing, at 21-5, led Kansas City to this casual blowout. Denver, at 39-54, also finished the year 21-5 to go
over .500 at the end. This seems to have been at the expense of their geographic partners, Colorado Springs.
