1899 Canadian League
It doesn't get any worse than this: a fanned six team league with two teams disbanding and the stop-gap adoption of the split-season in
sunny Ontario.
Oddly, league directors didn't like the idea of each team starting the second half with a 0-0 record, so each team was given a brand new
10-10 record on July 5th (a novel idea for keeping team winning percentages down). Chatham and St. Thomas disbanded after holding
out until July Fourth (a move that you'd expect an American city to do) and missed the second half, but London swept both halves:
31-8 and 23-10, not including their gift 10-10.
Slightly northern Stratford shifted it's franchise to Woodstock, June 8th, where the one interesting saving grace of this league, besides
Hamilton's Billy Congalton almost hitting .400 - was the appearance of an African-American player named "Galloway" at third base.
The league had him released in late June.
